_ I There is inherent in the nature of man an instinctive 1
, desire to worship some power beyond himself, and I
y whether he worships gods of his own creation or a God I
, i of immaculate mercy, the desire is ever the same, to ,
span the distance from mortal to immortal. In no ii
, domain of human thought has the journey of truth on ‘
{ the highway of progress met with more stubborn resist- .
‘ ance. On every hand the truth was handicapped by
superstition. Ignorance, always the mother of mys- j
tery, made °man the slave of his fears. Superstition ·
s i - became so deeply grounded in human minds as to become _
' matters of sac1·ed religion, and ignorance offered insur-
