- Biography / History
- Walter S. Tevis (1929-1984) was an American novelist and short story writer. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following his service, he finished high school at the Model Laboratory School and attended the University of Kentucky, studying creative writing under A.B. Guthrie, Jr. He held a B.A. (1949) and M.A. (1954) in English from the University of Kentucky as well as a M.F.A. (1960) from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. Tevis taught at Ohio University at Athens from 1965-1978. He published six novels including The Hustler, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Queen's Gambit, and The Color of Money. Three of his six novels were filmed including The Man Who Fell to Earth, which starred David Bowie. He also publishe two dozen short stories that were published in magazine such as Esquire, Playboy, Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post, and Cosmopolitan.
- Scope and Content
- The Walter S. Tevis papers (dated 1939-1984, undated; 1.26 cubic feet; 4 boxes) consist of correspondence, literary contracts, photographs, newspaper clippings, and manuscript drafts documenting the work of author Walter S. Tevis. Items of note include rough drafts of The Hustler and The Color of Money; business correspondence; and correspondence from Tevis' childhood and his service in the navy during World War II. The childhood correspondence is written on Stanford Children's Convalescent Home stationery and dates from his hospitalization for a heart condition.
