- Biography / History
- Clarence Joseph Hodge (1880-1906) was born in Dunlapsville, Indiana to Alexander Hodge (1855-1938), a farmer, and Anna Leech (1859-1909). He had three younger siblings: Viola (1883-1958), Clara (b. 1887), and Howard (1892-1912). In 1898, Clarence enlisted in the US Army, serving as a private in Company H, 1st Regiment, US Infantry. He served in the Spanish-American war, training at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, then subsequently deployed to Cuba and the Philippines. He passed away in 1906 due to having contracted Tuberculosis.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Clarence Hodge letters (1899-1901; 0.09 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprise letters from Clarence to his mother, Anna, and sister, Clara, while he was serving in the US Army in the Spanish-American War from 1899-1901. In the letters to his mother, Clarence writes about military funerals, medical treatments, the cost of items in Cuba and the Philippines, his pay, the travel between his different locations, and the beginning of his journey home from the Philippines through Hawaii. In the letters to his sister, he writes about not knowing where he'll be sent to next, life in the camps in Cuba, the possibility of staying in the Philippines working as a teamster for the US Government, and questions on whether she and their mother are receiving his letters. There is one additional letter addressed to Anna Hodge from William B. Hopper, that describes William's journey from the United States to Cuba while in the Army.
- The Clarence Hodge letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
