- Biography / History
- Lois Howard Gray (1920-2012) was the daughter of Dr. C.C. Howard and Julia Franklin Howard. Lois attended Transylvania University, graduating in 1940, and later earning a Masters of Arts degree in Art Education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. During World War II, Lois served in the U.S. Navy as a WAVES officer from 1943-1946. She founded her own interior design business and was the co-founder of Gray Construction with her husband, James Norris Gray (1917-1972). In addition to her businesses, she was an active board member for many organizations including the Kentucky Women's Leadership Network, the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce, Transylvania University, Kentucky Educational Foundation, the Governors' Scholars program, the Kentucky Arts Council, the Kentucky Center for the Arts, and the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. Lois married James Norris Gray following World War II; they had six children, including Julia Gray Navolio, Howard Gray, Jim Gray, Franklin Gray, Elisabeth Gray McKeachie, and Stephen Gray.
- Lois' father, physician Carl Clifford Howard, (1888-1971) was born to Dr. Thomas S. and Queen Lanford Howard at Summer Shade, Kentucky. Howard attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduating in 1911. In 1914, he opened the first hospital and in 1915 he opened the first medical laboratory in Glasgow, Kentucky. Howard served in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War I, joining in 1917. Following World War I, Howard brought new medical methods and practices to the region including blood transfusion, ambulances, and penicillin. Additionally, Howard was instrumental in the development for a State Tuberculosis Hospital in Glasgow and helped set up a Country Doctor Fund to encourage young people to become doctors in rural areas. He married Julia Franklin (1885–1968), a school teacher, in 1914; they had four daughters, including Carolyn Saunders Howard McKinley (1923-2017), Mildred Langford Howard (1916-1975), Mary Lloyd, and Lois Howard Gray (1920-2012).
- The Howards trace their lineage back to the Mulkey family, who established the Old Mulkey Meetinghouse, the oldest log meetinghouse in Kentucky (built around 1804).

- The Lois Howard Gray family papers (dated 1795-2012, undated; 41 cubic feet; 47 boxes, 1 folder) comprise correspondence, genealogy files, photographs, artifacts, financial and legal documents, printed material, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks that document the Howard and Gray families of Barren County, Kentucky. The collection largely consists of the papers of Lois Howard Gray, documenting her civic and artistic activities - including her enlistment in the WAVES during World War II - as well the activities of her immediate family, most notably her parents, Dr. Carl Clifford Howard and Julia Franklin Howard. The papers also include photographs and other papers relating to James Norris Gray's experiences training Chinese troops during World War II.
- Additonally, the collection contains expansive family history files maintained by Julia Howard and her sister-in-law Bess Howard. They include a significant number of original documents and photographs that date back to the late 18th century.
