- Biography / History
- Professor Richard B. Freeman was born in Philadelphia in 1908. He received his A.B. at Yale in 1932, and his A.M. at Harvard in 1934, and continued to professional training in Art Museum work at Harvard. He worked in several art museums from 1934-1941 including the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum-Kansas City, the Fogg Museum of Art-Harvard University, and the Cincinatti Art Museum. In 1941, he became the Director of Flint (Michigan), Institute of Arts. He continued in the academic field at the University of Alabama from 1950-1957, until coming to the University of Kentucky as a Professor of Art, and then Professor of Art Emeritus in 1974. Professor Richard B. Freeman began in 1958, what would be eighteen annual art exhibitions called, “Graphics,” at the University of Kentucky, that included works from famous artists of the day. Many of the exhibits went on to tour at art museums and galleries across the United States. From these exhibitions, Freeman was able to acquire some of the famous artworks that were featured, including works by Stanley Hayter, Carol Summers, Ralston Crawford, and Carol Summers. The “Graphics” art exhibitions continued until the 1970’s. He continued his career as President of both the Southeastern College Art Conference (1953-1954), and Midwestern College Art Conference (1965-1966). Professor Freeman’s publications include “Ralston Crawford, 1952,” “Lithographs of Ralston Crawford, 1963,” “Niles Spencer, 1966,” “Graphics ’73-Ralston Crawford, Drawings and Watercolors,” “Graphics ’75-Watergate-The Unmaking of a President,” and “The Best Political Cartoons of 1978.” The last two publications are featured in this collection.

- The Richard B. Freeman Papers include personal and professional correspondence concerning the "Graphics '75 Watergate," art exhibition and the publication of his two books, "Graphics '75 Watergate-The Unmaking of a President," and "The Best Political Cartoons of 1978". The collection also consists of twenty-five artists profiles that contributed to "Graphics '75 Watergate," art exhibit and later the book. Artist profiles include photographic, biblographic information, correspondence, and cartoons. The amount of materials vary from artist to artist. The majority of the correspondence concerns the bringing about and success of the art exhibition and the two books. Ralston Crawford works, an essay by Freeman, and personal correspondence from Crawford are also featured in the collection.

Freeman and Bill Schorr, along with a cartoon by Thomas Nast that was featured in "The Best Political Cartoons of 1978". 1983ua018:2:13 contains, "The Best Political Cartoons of 1978."
