- Biography / History
- The Pride Communty Services Organization was first formed in 1977 as the Gay Services Organization. In 1986, they became the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization and in 2015 they became the Pride Community Services Organization. They work to improve the lives of LGTBQ people in Central and Eastern Kentucky through increasing LGTBQ visibility, empowering community members, and educating the public. In 1996, they opened on the only pride center in Kentucky. In addition to operating the PCOS Pride Center, they organize the annual Lexington Pride Festival, produce the monthly magazine LinQ, and run the Ga Straight Alliance for Youth.
- Scope and Content
- The Pride Community Services Organization publications (dated 1979-2016; 2 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprises digitized images of the publications for Pride Community Services Organization and its predecessors, which documents the LGTBQ community in Lexington, the Bluegrass Region, and Kentucky. The collection includes publications from the organization through multiple name changes: the GSO (Gay Services Organization) newsletter (1979-July 1986); the GLSO (Gay and Lesbian Services Organization) News (August 1986-June 2013); and LinQ Magazine (July 2013-2016 and present). The publications document the advocacy and community work of the organization as well as the work of other LGTBQ organizations. Additionally, they provide information on cultural events, on notable issues, and resources available to the LGTBQ community.
