Collection Overview

Biography / History
Hugh Lee Grundy was born in Washington County, Kentucky to Charles Lee and Lucy McMakin Grundy on January 7, 1916. He had an older sister, Mary Bowman Grundy Carrico. At age 14 Hugh Lee learned to fly. After receiving his pilot's license in Louisville, he moved to California to attend aeronautical school and began working for Pan America in the late 1930's. When Pan Am received a contract to build air routes in southern Africa, Grundy was the chief architect. During World War II, Grundy served the Army Air Corps. In 1943, he married fellow Washing County native, Elizabeth Frances Christerson. After the war, he returned to Pan Am, and began work with General Claire Chennault, as part of Civilian Air Transport in China. Upon Communist control of Shanghai in 1949, Grundy relocated to Taipei, Taiwan. While there Grundy began working for the Central Intelligence Agency. He helped run Air America, China National Aviation Corporation, and other airlines with covert missions in Communist Asia. Grundy continued this work through the Vietnam War and also worked for domestic aviation companies in Virginia, Texas, and Florida. In 1984 Hugh and his wife, Frances, returned to Washington County and lived at Valley Hill Plantation, an estate and farm owned by the Grundy family since 1792. Hugh helped manage the farm, while working on genealogy and receiving the Kentucky Historic Farm and National Historic Place Register designation for Valley Hill. Hugh Lee Grundy died in 2011 and his wife, Frances died in 2017.
