New Features This Season
........
This season's WILDCAT TIPOFF will include several continuing features which have not been a part of our program in the past.
In each issue Wildcat fans will be able to read an account of the last meeting between Kentucky and their current opponent.
The TIPOFF offers a column, "This Week's SEC", which lists every team in the SEC and their opponents for the current week.
The third innovation in this season's program will be a column authored by "The Voice of the Wildcats", Cawood Ledford. In this issue's "Cawood Reflects", Ledford muses about the upcoming season.
WILDCAT TIPOFF, the official Lexington Center program for University of Kentucky basketball, is published by Lexington Productions, Inc.

14 JAY SHIDLER^-25
JAY SHIDLER is a newcomer to the Wildcat camp from Lawrenceville, Illinois. He was the state's top scorer at 32.7 points per game average and nine rebounds.
An all-around athlete, Shidler earned 11 letters at Lawrencevillefour in basketball; one as a football quarterback; three in baseball, and three in track, where he holds the school record in the high jump at 6'5".
UK coach Joe B. Hall likens him to a "jump-shooting Ralph Beard," a former all-time great who performed at guard for the Wildcats in 1946-49. "Jay is a true guardan exciting player who will need little seasoning. He plays the type defense effective in college basketball, is physically mature and has the skills to render an early contribution to our team.
"Jay comes from an athletic family and his personality and character will enable him to step right in and contribute to the Kentucky tradition," says Hall.

MERION HASKINS, a 6'4" senior forward who saw considerable playing time last year including two starts, is a solid fundamentalist and proven defensive player. Despite scoring only 2.3 ppg in 29 games, Haskins' leadership will play an important role in the success story of the '77 Cats.

16 TIM STEPHENS31
Wildcat newcomer TIM STEPHENS is from Stearns, Kentucky. He was the state's leading high school scorer in 1976 at 35.6 points per game and 18 rebounds.
"Stephens is a potential guard," says Coach Hall, "and one who can play the big guard. He is a proven quick forward and will have the opportunity to swing both positions. He and Shidler will give us the outside shooting potential we lacked last year. They should reopen our inside game by taking the pressure off our big men."
Stephens is a two-time All-State basketball player from McCreary County High School, Whitley City, Ky. "I've followed UK since I was 10 years old," Stephens said. "It has been my only thought to play at Kentucky. Now that I've reached that level, I'm as excited as can be."

(PUBLISHER'S NOTE: The popular "Voice of the Wildcats", CAWOOD LEDFORD, is in his 24th season as play-by-play announcer for the University of Kentucky. Cawood, sports director for WHAS radio and television since 1958, has been broadcasting since 1951. He is recognized as a sports authority throughout the nation.
CAWOOD LEDFORD
In the twenty-three years I've called Wildcat basketball there have been many individuals who have stood out as expectional players. From the 1958 championship team I thought, and still think that Vernon Hatton might be the best, right-down-to-the-last-second ballplayer Kentucky's ever had. He was at his best when it meant winning or losing a game. Hatton certainly was a great ballplayer.
The team with Louie Dampier and Pat Riley that went to the finals in 1966"Rupp's Runts." If they had not been ill with the flu I think they would have won it. I think that they were the best team in the country. Larry Conley has always been a great favorite of mine because even though he was a great shooter, I thought he just totally sacrificed himself to set up Dampier and Riley. You could say the same thing about Tommy Kron. They were really the heart of that ball club, even though the other two guys made the Ail-American.
Bob Burrow came in here from a junior college and led the conference in rebounding. That was just about the only time Kentucky reached into the junior college ranks.
Adrian "Odie" Smith might have been one of the most under-rated players that ever played here. He certainly showed it when he played pro ball.
A lot of people think that Dan Issel may be one of the greatest of all timers here and I think the pro ranks are perhaps proving that with the year he's having in the NBA. He has great pride and great determination to be good, and I do think that would have been one of the great teams had not Mike Casey broken his leg and lay out a yeartheir senior year. He came back and played the following season, but had they been able to keep the Casey-Pratt-Issel combo, I think that could have been a national championship team, but that's what could have been.
There have been so many players who can be classed a
