Scope and Content
The George B. Wurtz collection on Lexington, Kentucky (dated circa 1850s-1930s; 0.25 cubic feet; 2 boxes, 1 folder) consists of 55 gelatin silver prints made from earlier glass negatives, which depict sights aroundd Lexington and surrounding Kentucky counties. The collection also contains two glass negatives. Subjects depicted include Henry Clay's home, Ashland, the last slave sale at Cheapside, and various portraits. The original images appear to date from the 1850s-1860s. Some of the source glass negatives appear to have been owned by Lexington druggist John S. Wilson. Additionally, the collection contains three letters from/to George B. Wurtz concerning the origins of the photographs.
