Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Sheet music is musical compositions printed on bound and unbound papers. During the nineteenth century, middle and upper class Americans learned classical and popular music through buying sheet music and playing the composition on the piano or with another musical instrument. Copyright laws were laxed and publishing houses often printed their own versions of popular songs. During the nineteenth century Kentuckians primarily bought song sheets from publishers in Cincinnati and Louisville. The regional publishing houses often printed local composers' songs, like those by Stephen C. Foster and William Shakespeare Hays, which often were about Kentucky. By the mid-twentieth century, Americans could readily learn music via radio or recordings, therefore lessening the interest in and circulation of sheet music.
- Scope and Content
- The Sheet Music Collection (dated 1834-1975, undated; 4.4 cubic feet; 10 boxes) comprises song sheets published in Kentucky or the Ohio River Valley and songs about the commonwealth of Kentucky and its subjects during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection contains more than six-hundred compositions. Included are songs published in and near Kentucky, songs about Kentucky, and songs written by Kentucky composers. Of note are works by Stephen C. Foster and William Shakespeare Hays.
