Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Massillon Alexander Cassidy, born in 1856, served as superintendent of Fayette County Schools in Lexington, Kentucky from 1885-1901. Following a period of serving jointly as superintendent of both Fayette County and Lexington City Schools, he resigned the County post in 1901 to devote himself to Lexington's Schools exclusively. During a long period of public service, he gained a reputation as one of the most progressive and outstanding educators in the South. Mainly educated in private schools, he received his MA from the University of Kentucky. Mr. Cassidy was instrumental in bringing about educational law reform in Kentucky, particularly during the years 1903-1905. Dedicated to active participation in his profession, he served as President of the Kentucky Educational Association and the Southern Educational Association. In addition, he was active in the National Education Association throughout his life. After enjoying a long and distinguished period of service, Mr. Cassidy retired in 1928, and died in 1931. The M.A. Cassidy School, on Tates Creek Rd. in Lexington, Kentucky is named in honor of his many contributions.

- The Fayette County Schools Photographic Collection (dated 1901; 1 cubic feet) consists of 31 bromide emulsion photographs taken of M.A. Cassidy with local students and teachers circa 1901. Additionally, eight interleaves with names of some of the children and teachers and two album covers remain; the original album having been dissembled in order to preserve the images.
