- Henry Morse Stephens was born in 1857 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended Oxford University where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1880 and his master's degree in 1892 from Bailliol College. He married in 1880. In 1894 he emigrated to the United States to teach history at Cornell University, where he founded the Kipling Club. He became the Sather professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley in 1902 and remained there until his death in 1919. He wrote extensively about the French Revolution, among other subjects, and was well-loved by his students. He was known for emphasizing the value of using primary source material for research and created opportunities for students to travel to visit archives in Europe.
- Scope and Content
- The H. Morse Stephens French Revolution biographies (dated circa 1880; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise two handwritten bound volumes likely written by H. Morese Stephens that contain biographies of participants in the French Revolution. One volume is a loosely bound set of papers that have been folded and bound with string. This is an index to the larger book of biographies. The index is organized into thirteen categories. The first four categories have specific dates: Members of the Constituent Assembly, May 1789 to September 1791; Members of the Legislative Assembly, September 1791 to September 1792; Members of the Convention, September 1792 to September 1795; and Members of the Councils of Ancients and Five Hundred, September 1795 to November 1799. Stephens created nine additional categories of ministers, generals, bishops, journalists, authors, painters and musicians, men of science, admirals, and miscellaneous from the ten year time period of 1789 to 1799; however, he did not write entries for those categories in the index. The bound volume of biographies contains entries arranged alphabetically for people who participated in the French Revolution.
