Scope and Content
The Stanley Birchard letters (dated 1917-1919; 0.05 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprises letters from Stanley to his family members that document his experience as a soldier in the army during World War I in Ohio and France. In his letters, Birchard writes about his thoughts on training, his worry about being told to be bloodthirsty when overseas, getting sick and being in the hospital, getting leave, receiving letters and packages, and running into friends in camp. Once overseas, he writes about the weather, different places he is sent to, his daily duties as a supply officer, being away from the front lines, the comradery between the French citizens and American soldiers, and his plans for what he will do when he returns to the United States.
The Stanley Birchard letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
