- Biography / History
- The National Woman's Christian Temperance Union was founded during 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio. After listening to a lecture given by Dr. Dio Lewis, women moved to a non-violent protest against the dangers of alcohol. Within three months of the union's creation, 250 communities became alcohol free because of the chapter's efforts.
- Local chapters were called "unions" and were largely autonomous, but closely linked to the state unions and national headquarters. As all local chapters were linked closely to the national headquarters, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union became the largest woman's organization in the United States. Today, it is the oldest voluntary, non-sectarian women's organization in the world.

- The Lexington Central Woman's Christian Temperance Union ledger (dated 1928-1932; 0.3 cubic feet; 1 folder) include the reports of the local Lexington chapter of the larger, national organization. The ledger mentions successful events, locations where alcohol was located, honors deceased members, and lists upcoming events in the Lexington, Kentucky, community. There are reports of how the local union had affected the lives of the community. Many of the reports mention instances of spreading joy, volunteering at local prisons, and saying prayers for individuals and orgainzations in the community.
