Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- John Brand (1775-1849) of Lexington, Kentucky, manufactured hemp bagging and rope for packaging cotton. Originally from Scotland, Brand went into the hemp manufacturing business with John Wesley Hunt from 1803 until 1810. He subsequently established his own hemp firm. A Whig and friend of Henry Clay, Brand served on the Board of Directors for the Northern Kentucky Bank and the Lexington Cemetery. He died from cholera in 1849.
- Scope and Content
- The John Brand letter books (dated 1811-1841; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consist of a microfilmed copy of two letter books belonging to Lexington hemp manufacturer John Brand. The letter books contain copies of John Brand's outgoing business correspondence, relating primarily to hemp, his finances, and land owned by Brand. Brand exchanged letters with plantation owners in Natchez, Mississippi; Huntsville, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana. While the majority of the letters deal with business, there are references to local Lexington figures such as tavern-owner Captain John Postlethwaite and John Wesley Hunt.
