 PREFACE
The publication herewith presented, an index to the probate cases
filed in Chambers County, Texas, is No. 36 of the Texas series of counties.
The publication is intended to meet the requirements of day-to—day usage
by the officials of the county, attorneys, businessmen, and other citizens
who have occasion to consult probate case records for the preper conduct
of their affairs. The publication may be used by historians and geneal-
ogists to obtain references to unpublished source material. '
”The names of the deceased persons, minors, and other principals are
_ arranged alphabetically, with reference to filing date of the case and the
case number. Differentiation between probate cases assigned duplicate num—
bers is accomplished by the addition of a letter following the case number,
except in lunacy cases the prefix ”L" is used. Case numbers preceded by
”0” were assigned to previously unnumbered cases. The following numbers
in series 1—373 were not used as case numbers: 3, 2h, 33, 37, A2, A8, 51,
55—62, 67, 72, 74-76, 78—90, 93, 99, 100, 103, 104, 124, 125, 130, 131,
lhé’ 1&8, 150, 158, 165, 170, 180, 188, 191, 198, 199, 202, 207, 213, 222,
22 .”
In Chambers County all probate records are in the custody of the coun—
ty clerk. The case papers are arranged in 31 file drawers according to the
. first letter of the surname of the principal. Six file drawers in the
county clerk's office contain probate cases and one file drawer contains
lunacy cases 1890 to date. Twenty-four file drawers containing both pro—
' bate and lunacy cases are in the basement vault. A fire during the fall
of 1876 destroyed all prior probate records. ,
Since the transfer of territory from one county to another has af—
~ fected probate jurisdiction and has determined the county in which the
probate case should have been filed, a map and table of territorial
changes are included herein. Notations concerning present locatiOn and
availability of records pertinent to Chambers County follow:
Harris County, Houston, records extant.
_ Jefferson County, Beaumont, records extant.
Liberty County, Liberty, majority of records destroyed by fire 1876.
