No biographical information available on Shirley Coulsor.
Robert James Kucharski, AKA Dusty Owens (1930-2015) was born in Fairdealing, Missouri to Jim Kucharski (b.1907) and Anna Kucharski (b. 1912). Dusty started his music career at the age of 16 and was then signed on at Columbia Records. Some of his famous songs include; "Hello Operator", "Just Call On Me" and "Once More". In 2006 Dusty was inducted into America's Old Time Country Hall of Fame. Dusty and his wife Betty had four children together, and retired in Temple Terrace, Florida.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Shirley Coulsor scrapbook on country music (dated 1954-1957, undated; 0.48 cubic feet; 1 box, 37 photographs) comprises one scrapbook made by Shirley Coulsor that documents Dusty Owens and other country performers from the 1950s. The scrapbook contains photographs, autographs, newsletters, newspaper clips and programs from various country and bluegrass performers. Shirley was a member of the Dusty Owens fan club and the scrapbook mostly consist of materials related to him. Shirley joined the fan club in 1954 and she pasted in the clubs newsletters along with photos of Dusty and other performers. The newsletters consisted of pen pal lists, information about dues, picture orders and sections written by Dusty and club president, Louise Smith. The overall object of the club was to promote Dusty's music and request his songs from the member's local disc jockeys. Other performers listed in the scrapbook include; Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, Donna Darlene, Bill Spicher, Lucky Rogers and Faron Young.
The Shirley Coulsor scrapbook on country music collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
