Biography / History
The Louisville Courier-Journal Washington Bureau was the office of the regional newspaper, Louisville Courier-Journal, located in Washington, D.C. It connected national politics to local issues and contributed news stories from Washington, D.C. pertaining to Kentucky and the Louisville metropolitan area in southern Indiana. The paper covered Kentucky issues, such as local elections, legislation, and coal and tobacco industries. It was founded in 1868, but after increasing financial difficulties, closed in 2015.

The Louisville Courier-Journal Washington Bureau records (dated 1952-2010, bulk 1990-2006; 19.35 cubic feet and 1.44 gigabytes; 19 boxes and 321 digital files) contain research materials for news stories about the Blue Grass Army Depot, 2006 Comair plane crash, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and Kentucky legislators. There are newspaper clippings regarding Mitch McConnell and other lawmakers, numerous press releases, texts of speeches, reports, campaign documents, fundraising information, budget requests related to Kentucky, other congressional documents, and biographical information. The files contain documents pertaining to cleanup plans, contamination reports, and environmental impact reports for the Blue Grass Army Depot and Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The majority of these documents were obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests. Major subjects include Mitch McConnell, current and former legislators from Kentucky and Indiana, the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, the Blue Grass Army Depot, and the 2006 Comair crash.The collection includes three CDs containing digital files relating to the 2000 Comair crash and general aviation safety.

Scope and Contents

The legislators series contains documents related to the policies and personal lives of several Kentucky politicians. Most of the documents pertain to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell; also included are Labor Secretary Elaine Chao; Senators Richard Lugar, Evan Bayh, Jim Bunning and Wendell Ford; and Representatives Ed Whitfield, Ron Lewis, Ernie Fletcher, Anne Northup, Harold Rogers, and Ken Lucas. There are newspaper clippings, press releases, newsletters, budget reports, tax documents, and proposed bills related to these legislators.
