- Biography / History
- Fraternities began at the University of Kentucky in 1893 and the Greek system since then has grown to include the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and United Greek Council. Fraternity and sorority life are based on the values of scholarship, friendship, service, and leadership. As of 2022, there were 22 fraternities under the Interfraternity Council, 14 sororities under Panhellenic Council, 8 historically Black fraternities and sororities under the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and 6 special interest and culturally-based fraternities and sororities under the United Greek Council. The University of Kentucky Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is part of the Dean of Students Office, which was established in 1967 with the abolishment of the Office of the Dean of Men and the Office of the Dean of Women. Concurrently, the Office of Student Affairs was established in 1965. The Office of the Dean of Women was established in 1908 and the Office of the Dean of Men existed by 1913. Sources: 1. - The University of Kentucky Fraternity and Sorority Life records (dated 1950-2016, undated; 7.86 cubic feet; 6 record storage cartons, 2 document boxes, 1 oversize box, 1 oversize folder; 7.81 Gigabytes, 5386 files) consists of administrative documents, printed materials, photographs and slides, and computer disks from the Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, Office of Student Affairs, Sorority and Fraternity Life, and the Office of the Dean of Students that document Greek life at the University of Kentucky in the 20th century. The administrative documents include meeting minutes, constitutions and bylaws, annual reports, leases, directories, correspondence, budgets, and policies that record the activities, events, and governance processes of the Panhellenic Council, and Interfraternity Council by the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life, the Office of the Dean of Students, and, generally, the University of Kentucky. Printed materials, including flyers, pamphlets, studies, guides, handbooks, clippings, and program announcements, document Greek activities and events and demonstrate the relationship between Greek life and general university student life. The photographs, slides, and computer disks comprise a significant portion of the collection and provide a visual representation of the traditional role of Greek life at the university. Photographs of the events, groups, and individuals portray the social and academic relationships fostered during this time.
