Collection Overview

Biography / History
Janice Holt Giles was born on March 28, 1905, in Altus, Arkansas, and spent her childhood in Oklahoma, where her parents were teachers. She married Otto Moore in 1927 and the couple had one daughter. After a divorce in 1939, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky, to work for Dr. Lewis Sherill, Dean of the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. In 1943, Janice Holt Giles met her second husband, Henry Giles, on a two day bus trip. The couple married in 1945 and settled in Knifley, Adair County, Kentucky, near Green River, where Henry Giles's family had lived for seven generations. They stayed in this region until her death on June 1, 1979.
During her lifetime, Janice Holt Giles published over twenty works, including historical novels set in the Western frontier and contemporary fiction about the people of the Green River region in Kentucky. Giles also wrote autobiographical and nonfiction books, of which several were coauthored with her husband, such as A Little Better Than Plumb and The G.I. Journal of Sergeant Giles.
