Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Author Isabel McLennan McMeekin (1895-1973) was born in Louisville and educated at Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, and the University of Chicago. In 1921, she married Samuel H. McMeekin. Isabel wrote historical fiction with co-author Dorothy Park Clark under the pseudonym Clark McMeekin between 1940 and 1961. Their joint works include Show me a Land and City of the Flages. However, they both wrote under their own names; Isabel produced a variety of literary work, including mysteries, short stories, poetry, and children's literature during her lifetime.
- Scope and Content
- The Isabel McLennan McMeekin papers (dated 1850s-1950s, bulk 1940-1950; 0.9 cubic feet; 4 boxes) consist of manuscripts, photographs, a civil war scrapbook, and a book jacket, which document McMeekin's work as an author. The collection contains an unbound author's copy and a book jacket for Kentucky Derby Winner by McMeekin as well as a manuscript transcript of a Civil War scrapbook entitled A Civil War Scrap-book Lost and Found. The collection also contains the original scrapbook the edited scrapbook is based on. Additionally, the collection includes a draft of City of the Flags, written under the pseudonym Clark McMeekin, with substantial handwritten revision. The photographs consist of headshots of McMeekin and her co-author Dorothy Park Clark as well as images of them at a book signing for Show Me a Land at Morris Bookshop in Lexington, Kentucky.
