Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Born March 31, 1916, in Elihu, Pulaski County, Kentucky, John Bell Jones graduated from Somerset High School, Somerset, KY, in 1932. Throughout his life, he also used the name J.B. Jones. During the summer of 1935, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Kentucky and entered the University of Kentucky in September of that year. He married Zona Vee Sears Jones (also a UK graduate, 1941), in 1936 and received a BS in Agriculture from UK in January 1939. From 1939-1945, Jones taught vocational agriculture and sponsored local chapters of Future Farmers of America in high schools in Maysville, Mason County, KY, North Middletown, KY, and Stamping Ground, KY. Had three children, two surviving to adulthood: Jacqueline, 1937, Linda, 1941, and Jean, 1943. Between 1945-1946, he worked for the Indiana Farm Bureau Cooperative in Indianapolis, In., learning about state-wide farm bureaus with the idea of starting one in Kentucky. He then was hired as founding general manager of the Tennessee Farmers Cooperative (modeled on the Indiana Farm Bureau) in Nashville, Tn., where he worked from 1946 to 1953. In 1958, with two other men, he bought and operated a farm manufacturing equipment company, Four Star, Inc., in College Grove, Tn., which he operated until his final illness in 2007. His second wife Nancy K. Nonn Jones (married in 1963) sold the company in 2007. Jones died on September 2, 2007, in Nashville, Tn.
