Collection Overview

Biography / History
Arthur C. Arthur (1862-1948) was born in England to Arthur C. Arthur, Sr. and Sarah Arthur. He immigrated to the United States where he became a well-respected and highly sought after theatre manager, managing the Corning Opera House in New York and the Avenue Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky. Arthur was married three times, in 1885 he married Mabel Carr (1864-1901), in 1902 he married Elizabeth Seestadt (1874-1907), and in 1912 he married Mae Stromeyer Butcher (1888-1959).
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Arthur C. Arthur scrapbook (dated 1893-1897, undated; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one scrapbook that documents the professional life of Arthur as a theatre manager in New York and Kentucky at the turn of the twentieth century. The scrapbook contains a number of clippings detailing the plays put on by Arthur, his decision to move to Louisville from New York, how the New York society will miss him, his efforts to succeed at the new theatre, him opening new playhouses for vaudeville shows, and general praise written about him and his achievements in the theatre industry.
The Arthur C. Arthur scrapbook is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
