Collection Overview

Biography / History
In 1904, Morton High School, the first four-year high school for white students in Lexington, Kentucky, was opened with 192 students attending in the old Morton School building on the corner of Short Street and Walnut Street. A new building replaced that one in 1908. In 1918, that building became Morton Junior High School, the high school was renamed Lexington High School, and moved to another new building on the corner of Fourth Street and Limestone Street. In 1928, that building became Lexington Junior High School, the high school moved into a new building on East Main Street, and was renamed Henry Clay High School because of the school's proximity to Ashland, Henry Clay's home. The high school moved to its current location at 2100 Fontaine Road in 1970, by which time the city schools had been merged with the Fayette County Schools. Currently, over 2000 students are enrolled.
Faculty member Ellen Claire Allen organized the Young Historians Club in 1969, prior to move from old to new high school in 1970. The majority of this collection was acquired by the Club or by the Alumni Association Archives Committee, with which Allen is involved.
