Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Author Warder Harrison was born in Winchester, Kentucky, in 1933 and grew up in Louisville. For twenty-five years, he lived in Los Angeles, California, collecting items and documents related to performers and celebrities with Kentucky roots. After returning to Louisville in 1981, Harrison continued to research, collect, and write about movie stars, theater actors, and other celebrities from Kentucky. Using his collection he produced the book I Didn't Know That: Kentucky's Ties to Stage and Screen in 1994.
- Scope and Content
- The Warder Harrison Kentucky Entertainment Collection (dated 1820-2013; 24.3 cubic feet; 38 boxes, 1 item) comprises scrapbooks, photographs, genealogical research, letters, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, magazines, record albums, sheet music, playbills, programs, and advertisements, which document Kentucky's role in the world of music, theatre, radio, television, and film. Warder Harrison primarily collected the material during his research for the book I Didn't Know That: Kentucky's Ties to Stage and Screen. The material is organized into two series. The first contains items compiled and collected by Warder Harrison and pertains to Kentucky performers. The series includes material on members of the entertainment industry, including many composers, actors, stage managers, and choreographers, from 19th century itinerant players to more recent stars like Victor Mature, Irene Dunne, Rosemary and George Clooney, Loretta Lynn, Pee Wee King, John Jacob Niles, the Judds, Tom Cruise, and Lee Majors.
- Charles Ross collected the material included in the second series. His portion of the collection contains movie scrapbooks, programs, advertisements, and photographs relating to the entertainment industry, but not necessarily Kentucky. Notable items include playbills and programs from vaudeville acts and theaters such as the Bluegrass Theatre, Iroquois Amphitheater (Louisville), the Playhouse (Louisville), Coconut Grove Playhouse (Coconut Grove, Florida), Eastman Theatre (New York), and the Ziegfeld Follies. Scrapbook subjects include performers such as Bebe Daniels,Norma Shearer, Pola Negri, Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, and Clark Gable.
