The local
scene, as
seen by me

This year will be my
fourth in Lexington
and I've been
around the block a
few times, uh, not
like that, thoughl

meant that I've seen

almost everything

there is to see here.

The following is a
list of places that l
have found to be
acceptable to visit,

eat at or drive past.

If it's excitement that
you want. there's
nothing like a game

of laser tag at Laser

Ouest. if you're
broke, it can be
replicated with

barcode scanners in

a large grocery
store.

Probably the most
popular movie
theater is Regal
Cinemas, but that's
if you want to see
pop culture crap.
Try the Kentucky
Theatre downtown
for quality films.

The absolute best place

to eat is Tolly Ho;
that is if you can
handle the
atmosphere. As it
turns out. all the
805 punk rockers
didn't die, they've
just been staying
there.

If you're a sports fan,
you can take in a
Legends game. Be
warned though, the
entertainment
between innings is

only fun for kids and

immature adults.
People with that
much Spirit need
serious help.

A nice fast food place
is McDonald’s
315884654. Don‘t
let the serial
number fool you
because this isn't
your standard
McDonald's

restaurant. This one

has a Play Place.

If you head out
Richmond Road.

there are some nice

establishments.
especially Hooters.
But don‘t go there
expecting to see a
wide variety of
owls. I've been told
that the word
"hooters" is
referring to

something else. Who

would have known?

Here's my No. l tip: If
you really want to
have some fun go
see the Cool Kats
play at the
Lexington Ice
Center. There's
nothing like using
Obscenities at the
top of your lungs in
harmony.

Some advice from a
seasoned student

()K. When you first hear
someone tell you that they
have been in school for five
years you probably want to
tell yourself to never listen to
anything this guy has to say

If you take your own ad~
vice. then you will be doing a
terrible disservice to yourself.
I don't proclaim to be the Bud-
dha of all college advice but I
do have a few tidbits of infor-
mation that may help you. (I
apologize if it comes off like a
Career Center monologue.)

First. find a campus orga-
nization where you can fit in.
These are the places outside of
the dorms to meet friends.
These people will take you to
the ends of Lexington. get you
drunk and laid by someone
who probably has herpes and
then leave you to hitchhike
back to your norm. Not a pret-
ty sight!

I‘m not saying you have to
join a religious organization
or anything. just find a group
of people that share similar
principles. Hey. you can even
come write for the Kernel. I
suppose you could call that a
shameless Kernel plug. And
for the love of God. don‘t join a
fraternity just to get drunk
and get girls. It doesn‘t work
that way. You end up getting
your fraternity brothers' sex
and paying for their beer.

Second. go to class. No one
is saying you have to pay at-
tention. I am a firm believer
that math gets you nowhere
but hey. I still showed up to
my statistics class and got a C.
Eventually. you will find a
class that interests you. which
means you‘ll be one step closer
to finding a major that works.
Like my dad constantly
pounds into my head. “Ninety
percent of life is just showing
up.“ My dad is a psychologist.

Third. living with some—
one you know is not always
had. You've heard the rumors
that if you live with a friend
something will happen and
then your friendship will be

ruined forever.

You're in college now, be
mature enough to work it out
because, believe me, the alter-
native sucks. I took the wrong
advice for my first four years
and I had one good roommate:
The others were ridiculous.
They played the stereo in the
middle of the night when I was
asleep. left dirty dishes all
over the place and my fresh-
man roommate never took a
shower.

Next. when you are typing
a paper on the computer.
which will be every paper in
your college career. don't do it
with MSN Messenger or AOL
Instant Messenger open. It just
doesn‘t work to talk to your
friends while explaining why
atoms don‘t go with certain
molecules. As you can proba-
bly tell I didn‘t take chemistry.
Oh. and pom in the library is
out of the question. Have some
dignity and look at it in your
room. But first, please make
sure your roommate really did
go out of town for the week
end.

And finally. be wary of the
dating game. I am not saying
don‘t date, but rather remem—
ber you are an adult now. so
act like one. Guys will always
be neurotic sometimes. but
when you see a pretty girl.
look at her. Look at her all you
want. Just don’t do anything
else. And girls. this doesn‘t
mean you can just kiss any
guy you want to. Yes. you too
can say no.

What I am saying here
guys and gals is don‘t cheat on
anyone. Get rid of them if you
don’t want to be with them
anymore. It will pay off in the
long run and no one will call
you a “slut" or a “man-whore."

These are just a few things
you can do to somewhat suc-
ceed in college. Despite my
five years 7* you can get out in
four. Just don’t double major
and sleep through your final.
as I know some of you morons
will.
