- Biography / History
- During the Civil War, Kentucky was a borderline state--politically, and physically. Though the state officially chose to remain with the Union, there was much discontent within the Commonwealth over slavery. The Great Compromiser, Henry Clay, made Kentucky proud of its tradition of preserving the Union. However, by the time of the Civil War, the state was split down the middle. Kentucky was a slave state by law; however, most people did not own slaves. Many of those who lived in slave owning areas chose to join the Confederate army, while south central Kentucky became a sort of recruiting post for "colored" troops who were guaranteed freedom for fighting in the Union army. Kentuckians experienced Confederate army bandits ruining Union supplies, raiding small towns, and harming personal property. In the midst of battles and Confederate raids, Kentucky also had the worry of losing the Southern/European markets and/or the Northern markets for its goods--the loss of either would have caused a serious amount of damage to Kentucky's economy. Despite the split public opinion on slavery and the representative vote to remain neutral, the Kentucky General Assembly failed to ratify the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.

The collection was drawn together artificially from various purchases and is arranged by source of acquisition.
