- Biography / History
- The Lazarus family of Bowling Green, Kentucky includes George Henry "Harry" Lazarus (1859-1939), his wife Fannie Veluzat (1867-1958), and their three children: Mary Jo (1892-1982), Frances (1895-1970), and George Henry "Harry", Jr. (1899-1962). Harry, Sr. was a farmer and livestock trader. Harry, Jr. played basketball and baseball in college at Ogden College and Yale University, and then played semi-pro baseball in Bowling Green in the 1920s, before following in his father's footsteps as a farmer.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Lazarus family letters (dated 1906-1923; 0.10 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprises letters sent to Harry Lazarus, Sr. and Harry, Jr. from family and customers documenting life and work in Bowling Green, Kentucky in the early twentieth century. The letters to Harry, Sr. discuss the selling and purchasing of mules, desired bloodlines and attributes, complaints about animal injuries, costs of animals, and customers requesting him to act as a buyer for them. The letters to Harry, Jr. discuss spending time with family, going out dancing with him, personal health, the family farm, and inheritances.
- The Lazarus family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
