RA638~M—4——NEW WAYS FOR BUILDING BETTER HOUSES.

This cinder block crusher is in use by a private contractor

who supplies cinder blocks for the construction of many of the
houses. The crusher is near the project so that tranSportation
costs are as low as possible. Cinder blocks being used in a
number of Greenbelt houses have proven to be a building
material which combines low cost with the prime objective of
building work that lasts. On all Resettlement jobs low cost of
upkeep is the first requirement. Espensive repairs will be one
cost Greenbelt residents will escape though they will pay their
share in the taxes and government of State and county. After
construction is completed the federal government will step out,
leaving the direction of the town in the hands of a nonprofit
corporation embracing all members of the community. Resettlement
communities are not tax—exempt government islands but are
built to be normal American towns with a regular position in
their localities. (Resettlement Administration Photo.)
