RA194M2-~IN THE SHADOW OF THE CAPITOL.

Alley dwellings where families with small incomes seek the only
shelter they can afford. Washington, D. O. is no exception. Every
city in the United States has its slum areas and rows of tenements
or jerry-built houses. Unplanned cities, subject to the vagaries

of speculation and industrial encroachment, cost of taxpayer in the
end more than cities built with foresight and maintained with care-
ful zoning. Exactly 11 miles from the Capitol Dome, the Greenbelt
community beng brought to completion by the Resettlement Administra~
tion is demonstrating the needlessness and waste of such crowded and
unsanitary housing, and is showing the feasibility of decent housing
for workers with modest incomes. With transportation so readily
available today, people can easily live in airy and beautiful sub-

urbs and still have the advantages of city life. (Resettlement
