UNIVERSITY OF KENTUC W. D. FuNkhouserj dean of the Graduate School, was born in Rockport, Indiana, and was one of those boys who go to school with snakes and loads in their pockets. His chief interests are bugs, snakes, and dead Indians. His work lias carried him to practically ad of the countries of the world; to the Okefinokee swamp in search of new species of snakes and birds, and to the Sahara Desert in search of the great-grandson of the asp that stung Cleopatra.
People from all over the world send bugs to Dr. Funkhouser just to find out what they are, exactly. He has written 229 books and pamphlets and when poor Floyd Collins got into his cave and couldn't get out, they put Doctor Funkhouser in charge of the rescue operations.
Fie hesitates to name his favorite sport, because, you see, he is the chairman of the Atldetic Council and secretary of the Southeastern Conference, so he can't show a preference.
Thomas Poe Cooper, dean of the Agricultural College, was born in Pekin. Illinois, but loves Kentucky so much that he considers himself a Kentuckian through and through. Flis travels have carried him all over the United States and into Canada and Mexico. He once look a canoe trip in northern Minnesota, and relates thai such a trip can never be forgotten, whal with five-mile portages up hill and die like.
For recreation he works in his garden, and when it comes to eating anything goes, just so it includes beefsteak, rare roast beef or turkey.
Like most fishermen, he finds that the biggest ones always get away, but he did once catch an 18-pound land-locked salmon on the Canadian border and he can prove that.
They like pets at the Cooper home and have two clogsone a Scottie and the otherjust dog.
Dean W. S. Taylor, who has been head of the College of Education since 1923, was born somewhere in Kentucky "not so many years ago." He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and received his Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1913. He has the title of Doctor, which he procured at Columbia University in 1923. He has the reputation of being a very busy man. but sometimes dashes oil from his labors to take a hike thru the surrounding hills and woods. He belongs to many honorary organizations. His hobbies center around gardening and a game of golf is his favorite sport. Every summer "Wisconsin beckons to him" and it is reported that he is planning a trip to Yellowstone Park this summer.

9 3 5 KENTUCKIAN 193 5 Dean Boyd, dean of the Arts and Science College, was born in Cameron, W. Va., but since that lime has traveled all over the United States and Canada. He was reared down in Arkansas, and his earliest ambition, as lie now remembers it, was to become a pirate. Later, however, he majored in mathematics and took a pre-medical course in college. As a 16-year-old boy, back in 1893, he traveled up to Chicago to see the World's Fair, getting a job as bell-hop in a hotel there. Last summer he went to the Fair again, but somehow it just didn't have the same kick as it did back in '93.
Reading, long trips, and college sports interest hint very much, and he reads the sport pages religiously. He has a weakness for sweets, but his health has always been excellent. Dean Boyd has two daughters; Belly, who is a senior at (lie University, and Virginia, who is a secretary of the music department.
Levi Jackson Horlacher, assistant dean of the Agriculture College, was born in Frankfort, Indiana. Originally he wanted to be a farmer, but while in college decided on teaching for a career. His travels include considerable of the United States and some of Canada, which he considered a very interesting country from an agricultural standpoint. Sheep are a specialty with him. and the Avails of his office are adorned with pictures of thoroughbreds.
For recreation he reads, drives, bowls, and plays diamond ball and volley ball with considerable enthusiasm.
Dean Horlacher has two daughters, Helen, who is 14, and Frances, who is 7. When supper time comes around you'll find him the happiest when the meal is built upon a framework of broiled beefsteak and French fried potatoesa combination he is sine can't be beat.
T. T. Tones, dean of men, hails from Clay County, Kentucky. At an early age he decided to follow teaching. He obtained his bachelor's degree here at the University, and later earned his Ph. D. at Harvard. He is interested in almost all sports, is fond of traveling, and eats whatever is set before him.
Last winter he and Dean Evans were on the way to the Wallace banquet in Louisville when the) collided with a telephone pole, but fortunately neither was seriously hurt. As a boy he liked to ride horses, but of late, having neither horses nor time to ride them, has neglected the sport.
Dean Jones lives on a suburban estate about one and one-quarter miles from the campus. He has one child, a daughter, who is a senior at the University. W. E. Freeman, a native Lexingtonian, lias been acting clean of the College of Engineering during the past. year. He was graduated from Transylvania College and later received his Master's degree from the University. When he was rather young (not very long ago) he journeyed to New York where lie worked lot a lew years.
He is another one of our deans who likes to work in his garden. When his gardening is clone he clashes off to Hen iugion Lake to angle lot members of the finny tribe. College football and basketball appeal to him very much. But smoking has no attraction whatsoever. He has two daughters, Jane, a freshman at the University, and "Little Mar-jorie."
Alvin E. Evans, dean of the Law College, was born in Valley, Nebraska, and has ridden horses since he was less than 4 years old. The male members of his family were noted for their strength, and in his youth Dean Evans was an accomplished wrestler.
He has traveled all over the United States, and enjoys flying. While in Washington, D. C, he flew in a monophane with a Navy officer, and lour years ago he had a ride in an autogyro.
His son, Palmer, is a singer and stands (i feet and three inches at Mi. He litis intention of becoming and engineer, but his little sister, Pat, who is seven, is determined to be a clean of women.
Dean Evans decided on law for a career when he was twenty-five. At this time he was studying Latin and Greek. He got interested in Roman law and this in turn lead to his study of the common law.
Edward Wiest, dean of the College of Commerce, hails from Florida. He has lived all over the United States and prefers Vermont and Kentucky. He found Vermont especially enjoyable because it gave him the opportunity to skate and toboggan.
Cutting grass and tending flowers gives him much enjoyment, but he also likes to fish and once caught an 11-pound dogfish in Lake Llelanau, Michigan.
Dean Wiest tries to follow the rules of good diet, but admits a weakness for deserts and sweetsespecially cocoanut custard.
While working his way through school he did considerable work with the weather bureau in Washington, D. C, and in New York City.
The pet of the family is a Chile dog named Ching Boy. who is especially fond of the Dean's daughter, Marjory, who is a student at the University.

935 KENTUCKIAN 193 Sarah Gibson Blanding is dean ol' women and assistant professor of political science. She was born right here in Fayette County, has traveled all over the United States, and spent some of her time studying in England. As a very young girl she wanted to be a doctor, but an active interest in physical education led her into this field.
Dean Blanding is fond of swimming and once swam out to a lighthouse six miles off New Haven. Swimming and canoeing interest her greatlv, and when ii comes 10 food, she doesn't like deserts, sweets or meals, prefei ing instead fruit and vegetables.
In the summer lime she conducts a camp for girls on the Kentucky River. Once a year they take a trip down the river, twelve girls going on horseback and the rest aboard a double-decked barge on the river.
She is fond of riding, but says her technique consists in getting on, and staying; on. or rather living to.
Mrs. Sarah B. Holmes, assistant dean of women, has lived in Pennsylvania, New England, Ohio, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mexico, h was revolutionary times when the Holmes family moved to Mexico so that Mr. Holmes could organize a physical education department there. They were in Mexico City when Diaz was driven out by Ma-dero's forces, and Mrs. Holmes was in the hospital then with typhus fever. Later they visited Cuernavaca, where the Morrow home is located, but had no better luck there. The Zapata bandits captured the town while they were there, and even the railroads for a considerable length of time, thus preventing the escape of the citizens and the Holmes family.
Mrs. Holmes likes to drive, walk, and read, and is considering taking up golf in self-defense. She has four children, Mildred, John, Kendall, and Lillian who has won considerable distinction as a campus beauty.
