- Biography / History
- Ralph Spear (1911-1992) was born in Brockton, Massachusetts to George Spear (b. 1883) and Anastasia Riley (b. 1885). In 1935, Spear married his first wife Violet Work (1911-1979), with whom he had at least two children, John (b. 1937) and Malcolm (b. 1939). After his divorce with Violet was finalized in June 1963, Spear married Jane Foxcroft (b. 1916) in October of that same year. The couple both worked for the government and lived together in Alexandria, Virginia.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Ralph and Jane Spear travel scrapbook (dated 1970; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one scrapbook that documents the vacation taken by Ralph and Jane to England in the 1970s. In the scrapbook, they describe each day of the trip, the hotels stayed in, cities and sites visited, their opinions on restaurants and food, who they contacted to make specific travel and transportation plans, and photographs and clippings of their trip. The entire scrapbook is a photocopied version of the original, so where items could not be copied in, there are notes describing what the blank spaces correspond to in the original copy.
- The Ralph and Jane Spear travel scrapbook is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
