Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The University Senate Council Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Minorities was established approximately around 1988-1989. The committee focused on the status of minority faculty, administrators and professional staff, and hourly employees present at the University of Kentucky. The committee produced a report in 1990 that provided recommendations for the president and overall campus in order to address discrepancies regarding employment and race, ethnicity, among other issues.
- President Lee T. Todd implemented the recommendations of the University Senate Council Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Minorities and established the President's Commission on Diversity (PCD) within his first year as president of the University of Kentucky, 2001. The commission was charged by Dr. Todd to advise him on "matters of racial and ethnic diversity in employment, working environment, compensation and campus leadership; recommendations for enhancing the University's recruitment, retention, and graduation of minority students in all of its programs; recommendations for enhancing the University's recruitment and retention of minority faculty and staff; and concerns about the creation of a campus that is inclusive in its cultural affairs, communication, curriculum, and extracurricular opportunities." The commission originally consisted of nineteen members including faculty, staff, students, and a community representative. The first chairperson of the PCD was Dr. Deneese L. Jones. Some achievements produced by the commission include: consistent annual reports, the President's Awards for Diversity in honor of members of the UK community who have "demonstrated outstanding efforts towards embracing diversity while maintaining academic excellence", and informational programming such as the "While We Were Sleeping: Toward Diversity in Higher Education" panel. The President's Task Force on Racial Diversity and Equality was established approximately around 2004-2005. It collaborated with the President's Commission on Diversity as a subset of the commission.
