- Biography / History
- Carol Boggess is an author, president of the Appalachian Studies Association, and former English professor at Mars Hill University. Her work's focus is the literature of the Appalachian region. During college, the book River of Earth by James Still was the subject of her dissertation in 1995. Her book James Still: A Life was published in 2018 and earned her the 2018 Kentucky History Award given by the Kentucky Historical Society. She lives with her family in Burnsville, NC.

The collection includes materials related to her 1995 dissertation on "River of Earth, entitled "Following River of Earth from Source to Destination and the extensive collection of research materials leading to the 2017 publication of the biography James Still: A Life. The boxes include interviews of Still, his friends and family, photocopies of correspondence, selected manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia, outlines of Still's life, notes and selected drafts of the biography.
