Collection Overview

Biography / History
After graduating from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, James Ben Ali Haggin (1922-1914) invested in real estate, mining, and farming. His business interests all proved successful and allowed him to move around the country. In 1880 he began to breed racehorses at his farm the Rancho del Paso. His 44,800-acre California horse-breeding ranch, based in Sacramento, California, was considered to have been the largest of its time. He and his partner, Lloyd Tevis, owned ranches in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
His horse racing successes including Tyrant, winner of the Belmont and Kentucy Derby winner Ben Ali. By 1897, Haggin had returned to Kentucky, where he purchased the Elmendorf Farm from Daniel Swigert. Expenses and distance forced him to close down the Rancho del Paso after he began operations at Elmendorf. Haggin had a mansion constructed at Elmendorf Farm. Adolf Wegner, the chief building engineer, oversaw the building of Green Hills Mansion at Elmendorf.
