Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- A University of Kentucky Athletic Association was incorporated at the instigation of University president Herman L. Donovan in 1945. However, the Association had existed in one form or another at least as far back as 1914, having apparently been comprised of coaches and University officials, including the Athletic Director. A University Athletic Council, established in 1920, was to have included in its membership, in addition to the university president and the athletic director, the treasurer of the Athletic Association. Henry E. Curtis, whose correspondence is present here, was treasurer of the Council from 1891-1930.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Athletic Association records (dated 1899-2001, bulk dates 1910-1971; 6.3 cubic feet, 17 document boxes, 1 slim document box, 1 folder) primarily comprise correspondence, Board of Directors and committee meeting minutes, foundational documents, Southern Conference elligibility certificates, financial records, policies, and event programs documenting athletic programs and their administration at the University of Kentucky from 1914 to 1931, 1942-1947, and 1957-1971. The correspondence and financial records detail the scheduling of athletic events, purchase of equipment, selection of coaches, and the University's membership in athletic conferences, among other topics. Also included is a 1980 subpoena in the case of William Spivey against Bantam Books, Inc., along with 1952 basketball scandal documents; Articles of Incroporation and non-profit status letter, 1945; a policy statement on intercollegiate athletics, 1952; a file of Adolph Rupp speeches with a collection of humorous remarks; basketball game and player statistics and charts from 1946-1952; Athletic Association student tickets/coupons (1913-1924); and printed material including various conference and athletic association constitutions and by-laws.
