Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass works to connect the Jewish community in and around Central Kentucky. The organization was chartered in 1976 as the Central Kentucky Jewish Association. It changed its name to the Central Kentucky Jewish Federation in 1985 and to the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass in 2009, reflecting name changes in the broader umbrella organization. The Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass is a regional organization operating under the Jewish Federations of North America. The Federation seeks to bring Jewish community members together through holiday parties, lectures, Yiddish courses, meals, and other celebrations of Jewish heritage and culture. They also host fundraisers and provide financial assistance for Jews in need, both locally and around the world.
Scope and Content
The Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass records (dated 1939-2015, bulk 1977-2011; 6.07 cubic feet and 13.7 gigabytes; 11 boxes, 2 items, and 14,228 digital files) contain administrative records, publications, bulletins, financial records, photographs, meeting minutes, committee records, ledger books, and digital files documenting the community events, activities, and operation of the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass. The ledger books and some meeting minutes are from the related Central Kentucky United Jewish Appeal organization, whose national umbrella organization merged with the Federation in 1999. Materials documenting prominent community events include records for Jewish celebrations, volunteer opportunities, fundraisers, and information from the Hillel Jewish Student Organization at the University of Kentucky. The collection includes Shalom, the newspaper of the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass, along with other publications. The collection includes some photographs of Federation members. The collection contains born-digital files migrated from floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, and other media. These files include photographs from various events, meeting minutes, advertisements, and material for the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass website.
