- James R. Collins served as an administrative assistant in the office of Governor Louie B. Nunn. From 1970 to 1973, Collins assisted in the processing of the Frederick Moore Vinson papers at the University of Kentucky.
- Scope and Content
- The James R. Collins correspondence (dated 1971-1972; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises letters from presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Harry S. Truman; Justices Tom Clark, William O. Douglas, Earl Warren, and Stanley Forman Reed; and other prominent public officials regarding their impressions of and relationships with Chief Justice Fred Vinson. Other correspondents include Byron White, Barry Bingham, and Paul Porter. The papers also include speeches sent by Justice William O. Douglas, typed comments sent by President Johnson, and one newspaper clipping. Collins wrote the correspondents seeking information to aid in the processing of Vinson's papers and as research for a never published biography of Vinson.
