Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Dr. Waller O. Bullock, born in Frankfort, Ky. November 28, 1875, attended Transylvania University (Lexington, Ky.) and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1896. After graduation he interned at Philadelphia's Polyclinic Hospital and in 1899 located in Lexington where he practiced medicine until 1946. During World War I he served as a major in the Army medical corps and later helped found the Lexington Clinic with Dr. David Barrow and his son Dr. Woolfolk Barrow.
- Minnie Barbee Pettit was born in 1877 and grew up on a farm outside Lexington. She was married to Dr. Waller Bullock in 1907. In 1912 the Bullocks purchased the house on Market Street where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Bullock's interests included gardening, sewing, birdwatching, and collecting snuff bottles. Katherine Rebecca Pettit, born in 1869, was Minnie Pettit Bullock's sister. Kate Pettit, along with May Stone of Louisville, Ky., played a significant role in bringing education to Appalachia when they established the Hindman Settlement School in Knott County and the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County. Among her many interests were collecting coverlets and folk tales and ballads of the region.
- Scope and Content
- The Bullock-Pettit collection includes the personal papers of Dr. Waller O. Bullock, his wife, Minnie Pettit Bullock, and her sister Katherine Rebecca Pettit. The group of papers from Dr. Bullock's materials include medical articles written by Dr. Bullock, that were reprinted from medical journals, financial documents, newspaper clippings and memorabilia. Separately packaged folios contain blueprints of several retail stores in Lexington as well as the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
- The majority of the papers associated with Minnie Pettit Bullock are of a financial nature, mostly canceled checks and bank statements. Also present are personal memorabilia such as notes on snuff bottles and gardening. In addition there are materials on the John Bradford Historical Society, of which Mrs. Bullock was a charter member, and are organized into three folders. Most of Katherine Rebecca Pettit's materials are related to the settlement schools at Hindman and Pine Mountain (Ky.) and to Appalachia in general. Included are articles written by Ms. Pettit and others, notes, reports and correspondence.
- The Audio-visual section includes glass slides used for medical lectures, lantern slides, photographs of the renovation of the Ephraim McDowell House, Danville, Ky. and various other photographs.

Checks and/or check stubs are listed for the following bank accounts: Account #1: First National Bank and Trust Co. Account #2: First National Bank and Trust Co. Account #3: Union Bank and Trust Co.
In 1929, he First and Third National Bank and Trust Company merged with the Phoenix and Third National Bank Company to form he First National Bank and Trust Company. Dr. Bullock continued to use old Phoenix checks until the next year. Account #2 appears to be a separate account for constructions of a building, probably the Montgomery Ward building (see blueprints, Folio 6). Account #3 is a joint account with Mrs. Bullock.
Folders 16-28 contain bank statements for the previous accounts and an additional account: Account #4: Second National Bank
Folders 17-27 contain cancelled checks for Dr. William Thompson Briggs, written on the First National Bank and Trust Company. Dr. Briggs was on the staff of the Lexington Clinic and was the son-in-law of Dr. Bullock's good friend, Dr. David Barrow. Dr. Birggs was the father of Mary (Mrs. Williams) Floyd.
