Collection Overview

Biography / History
Floyd Orus Rupe was born in Menifee County, East Kentucky on August 12, 1912. Orus, as he was called, was a Presbyterian minister for 60 years. Rupe graduated from Ezel High School in Ezel, Ky. (1931?). He moved to Chicago where he attended the Moody Bible Institute (1933-1935), supporting himself by working as a bus boy at Montgomery Wards’. Additionally, he preached at the Pine Grove Methodist Church near Wellington, Ky., in the summer of 1935. Rupe then attended Sterling College (Sterling, Ks., 1935-1938) while also working as a pastor at the Hopewell United Presbyterian church (Hopewell, Ohio, Dec 1937-Sept 1938). He attended the Xenia College Seminary in Pittsburg, Penn. from 1938-1939.
Rupe became pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Garnett, Kansas, in May of 1941; was ordained at The Kansas City Presbytery of the United Presbytery Church on June 5th of that year; and married Mary Patterson (1918-2000) on Dec. 10, 1941. They had three children (Orus Rupe Jr [1946-2004], Arthur Rupe, and Rev. Lucille Rupe Watt). Rupe became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Rushville, Ind. (1943-1949), and the United Presbyterian Church in East Palestine, Ohio (1949-1955). In 1968? Rupe entered the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at A.B. Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky, working as a chaplain at the medical center as part of the training. After completing the training Rupe worked as pastor at the United Presbyterian Church in Belle Center, Oh. (1969-1977), the Presbyterian Church in Berea (1977-1981), the Portage Presbyterian Church (1981-1983), Memorial Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Ind., and LaGrange Presbyterian Church (Ind.).
In 1982 Rupe began working as a volunteer chaplain at Elkhart General Hospital, where his twin brother, Lloyd Odus Rupe (1912-1986), was a surgeon. In 1986 Orus took over as director of pastoral care, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. Orus Rupe died on July 30, 1994.
Scope and Content
The Orus Rupe papers (dated 1933-1993, undated; 2.43 cubic feet; 6 boxes) primarily comprise typescript transcripts of sermons, radio devotionals, and hospital chaplaincy newsletter columns delivered or written by Rupe during his 60-year career as a Presbyterian minister in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The sermons (1939-1944, undated) include the associated Biblical scripture as well the "aim" of the sermon. Some are handwritten. The radio devotional transcripts (1952, 1966, and 1972-1976) were primarily prepared for a program called "Moments of Meditation" on station WTOO (Bellefontaine, Ohio) and also include the associated Biblical scripture. Other radio devotional transcripts have individual titles and were delivered on stations WLKS (West Liberty, Ky.), WHAS (Louisville, Ky.), and WLIO (Lima, Ohio). There are also a few handwritten notes. The chaplaincy column was titled "Light from this Shadow" and was written for the Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart, In., newsletter (1986-1993). The column typescripts are individually titled and include personal details and recollections of Rupe's activities, family and friends, and places he lived or visited from boyhood on. There are also two student essays written by Rupe and a "Poems" Box or subject file of clippings, quotations, and Bible verses he collected as inspiration for his sermons and columns.
