Scope and Content
The Jessie Buchanan diary (dated 1911-1912; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one diary that documents the daily life and travels of Jessie Buchanan in Massachusetts, Jamaica, and Panama in the 1910s. Jessie is the primary author of the diary; however, there are a few entries from 1911 authored by her mother, Grace. The entries describe Jessie and her mother's trip to Panama, conditions on the ship, a day trip to Kingston, Jamaica; Panamanian culture, ruins visited, conditions of the cities they visited, and interactions with locals. Upon their return from Panama, Jessie continues to write in the diary, describing daily life for an upper-class woman in Massachusetts, including social visits, daily weather, notes on anniversaries and birthdays, the deaths of friends, and visits with family.
The Jessie Buchanan diary is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
