Collection Overview

Biography / History
Leeland Hathaway (b. circa 1834), a native of Clark County, Kentucky, served under Confederate General John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War. He was held prisoner at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland. He was captured while serving as a bodyguard to Jefferson Davis' wife, Varina Howell Davis. His wife was Martha Wheeler Hathaway was born in Winchester, Kentucky, in 1845. Leeland and Martha had a daughter, Carrie Lee Hathaway (ca. 1867-1954), who lived in Lexington, Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Hathaway family papers are documents of Leeland Hathaway, his wife, Mattie Wheeler Hathaway, and daughter, Carrie Lee Hathaway. Included are letters written by Leeland Hathaway which refer to his imprisonment at Allegheny, Pennsylvania and at Fort McHenry (Baltimore, Md.) during the Civil War after his capture while serving as bodyguard to Jefferson Davis' wife, Varina Howell Davis. There are transcripts and notes of Mattie Wheeler Hathaway's diary (1869-1865) edited by Mrs. Hammund Dugan, a small Bible carried by Captain Hathaway and his scrapbook clippings, poems and pencil sketches. Additionally, the collection contains a child's scrapbook, 13 letters from J. L. Wheeler to Mattie Wheeler and Mrs. Caroline Wheeler (1861-1865), papers concerning Hathaway's parole and release from military prison, and a statement he made concerning Stephen Gano Burbridge and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings primarily about Kentucky and the Confederacy. Letters and papers of Col. James Mason comprise a small portion of the Hathaway family papers.
