Collection Overview

Biography / History
Harriette H. Robinson (1822-1861) was born in Bennington, Vermont to Uel Merrill Robinson (1797-1872) and Betsey Hicks (1798-1893). In 1840, she married Hial Kenyon Parsons (1819-1912) and together the couple had seven children: George (1841-1919), LeRoy (1843-1937), Hial (1846-1912), Charles (1847-1917), Mary (1849-1913), Sarah (1851-1938), and Uel (1855-1884).
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Harriette Robinson Parsons family letters (dated 1836-1873, undated; 0.09 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprises letters sent to Harriette Robinson Parsons and her husband, Hial Parsons, from friends and family in Vermont and New York in the mid-nineteenth century. The letters to Harriette come from her husband and family members, discussing business ventures, personal health, train trips, education, and congratulations on her marriage. The letters to Hial Parsons are majority from Harriette, she writes about her health, how their children are faring, visits from friends and family, financial strain while he is away, her desire to have him return home soon, and receiving letters from distant family members. Other letters in the collection cover a majority of the same topics, along with attending mass, planning visits to friends, and business plans.
The Harriette Robinson Parsons family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
