Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Reuben Norman (1737-1805) of Virginia married Rachel Browning (1760-1839) in 1771. They had eight children; three, including Caleb Norman, survived into adulthood. Caleb Norman (1777-1848) was born in Culpepper County, Virginia, and married Sarah (Sally) Finnell in 1800 in Boone County, Kentucky. Caleb Norman was a farmer, who served in the 10th Regiment (Boswell's) Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812.
- Scope and Content
- The Norman family papers (dated 1787, 1877-1899; 0.2 cubic feet; 2 folders) consist of a mathematics copybook written by Reuben Norman for his son Caleb Norman. The copybook contains significant handwritten marginalia from Caleb as well as many others. The collection also includes several letters from the late nineteenth century, including one written by L.C. Norman, president of the Old McBrayer Distilling Company in 1899.
