             Biographical/Historical note
Samuel Haycraft of Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Ky. was appointed clerk of both circuit and county courts in 1816. He held that position until 1851, when he began the practice of law in Elizabethtown, Ky. In 1855, he was elected as clerk of the circuit court and served until he became a state senator from 1858 until 1862. In 1862 he was again elected as clerk of the circuit court, and so continued until his retirement in 1868. Samuel's son's name was Edgar H. Haycraft and his son-in-law was Charles D. Poston.
             Scope and Contents note
The Haycraft collection is composed largely of correspondence to and from Samuel Haycraft. The correspondents include Haycraft's family, especially Edgar H. Haycraft, his son; Charles D. Poston, a son-in-law; John B. Helm, uncle of Governor John Larue Helm; General Joseph Holt, Samuel Helm Morton, and Benjamin Pope. Some correspondence discusses the erection of a Daniel Boone monument. The business papers are primarily legal in nature and have been separated into Haycraft's personal business and the papers, receipts and documents pertaining specifically to Hardin County.
The obituaries of the following people are also included: Bettie Haycraft, Sallie Helm, John Helm, and Sarah Brown Haycraft. In addition, the collection contains a family journal kept by Sallie Morton, an indenture involving a land sale in Indiana, and a photograph of a watercolor of the Haycraft home. There are also Dix, Haycraft, Helm and Morton family genealogical charts as well as William Showers' legal documents and receipts. There is also a photocopy of a letter from Abraham Lincoln to Samuel Haycraft, May 28, 1860.
Portions have been photocopied and located in 1M50M45.
