Angier was removed from the mission, and succeeded by Rev. S. H.
Montgomery, 0. S. D., who for a short time, and with occasional
assistance from Father Badin, and from his own associates of St.
Rose, managed to serve both the congregation in Scott county and
that in Lexington. He was soon afterwards relieved altogether of
the care of the Lexington church, by the appointment of Rev. Wim.
T. Willett, 0. T. D., who served it alone until disabled by sickness
in I823, uwhen Rev. Samuel H. Montgomery, 0. S. D., was again
sent to his assistance. Father \V. T. WN'illett is represented by Dr.
Spalding as a man "as remarkable for his talents as he was for his
years. He won the hearts of all who knew him." He fell a .vic-
tim to consumption on the 9th day of May, 1824, and his remains
are interred in the new Catholic Cemetery at Lexington. Two
other priests of those early days are buried here also, the Rev. John
McCormick, and Rev. Wim. 'Morgan, a native of Ireland,
and a convert to the Catholic faith, who died at the residence of
Major John Hanley in No-vemnber, 1840.
In i836, Father Edward McMahon undertook the serious task
of building a new church. Finding it impossible to raise the nec-
essarv funds at hoome, where the Catholic people were not able to
subscribe the full amount, he xvent to New Orleans to collect, and
is said to have realized the suml of 5,ooo. Returning in 1837, he
erected the present St. Peters.o which wvas opened for Divine ser-
vice and dedicated by Right Rey. Dr. Chabrat on the 3d (lay of
December, 1837.
The list of pastors of St. Peters Church, Lexington, between
the years 1824 and i864 includes the following names: Rev. Guy

part of the year 1826; Rev. George A. -l. Elder, from 1826 to 1830;

solved to build another and a larger church. The work was l)egtn
in i865, and the corner-stone of St. Paul's was laid by Right Rev.
George A. Carroll, bishop of Covington, on the 12th of November
of that year. The church being finished was dedicated October i8,
i868. It should be stated that when Father IBekkers arrived in
Lexingtonl he found subscriptions awaiting him in the hands of
TMr. Denis 'Mulligan amounting to the sum of nine thousand clollars.
This amount was at once devoted to the purchase of the lots on
Short street upon which the church of St. Paul's now standss, to-
gether with an old but substantial and roomy dwellingy house at-
tached, Afterwards used as a pastoral residence, and formerly

house; others, that she only passed in it the years of her girlhood.
Father Bekkers (lied in February, 1887, and was succeeded by
Rev. Ferd. Brossart, who improved St. Peter's at a cost of 3.000,

Brossart was appointed \Vicar General of the diocese of Covington,
