Collection Overview

Biography / History
Mabel Stringer (1883-1974) was born in South Elgin, Illinois to Frank Stringer (1850-1882) and Anna Works (1859-1928). In 1913, she married Carl Lindholm (1885-1959), a postal clerk, and together the couple had one child, Velda (1915-1990). The family remained in South Elgin, Illinois their entire lives.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Mabel Stringer letters (dated 1911-1913, undated; 0.09 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprises letters sent to Mabel from her boyfriend, friends, and relatives that document courtship and daily life in Illinois in the early nineteenth century. Mabel's boyfriend, Carl Lindholm, writes to her about his daily life, going to work, fixing items around the house, spending time with his family, making plans with Mabel, and discussing their future as a married couple. Other letters to Mabel are from friends and family, mainly expressing their sympathies to Mabel and her other on the unexpected death of Mabel's brother. One letter is from her brother to their mother requesting she tell him all about her trip.
The Mabel Stringer letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
