Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Dr. William Loftus Sutton was born May 21, 1797, and received his medical education at Transylvania University and the Maryland Medical College. In 1833, after living in Catlettsburg and Morganfield, Kentucky, he returned to his native Scott County where he practiced medicine for the remainder of his life. In 1851, William L. Sutton and a number of his colleagues founded the State Medical Society (now the Kentucky Medical Association). Sutton served as the first president and as chairman of the committee on epidemics. He married three times. He and his first wife, Mary Belle Catlett, had four children; George Catlett, John, and William (all of whom became physicians) and Mary Belle. He and his second wife, Nancy Cooper, had a son William Henry. Sutton and his third wife, Ann Tibbs Webb, had three children; Annie Temperance, Caroline, and Henry Craig. Sutton died July 20, 1862, in Georgetown, Kentucky; he and is buried in Georgetown Cemetery.

- The William L. Sutton and A. L. Fisher papers (dated 1810-1967; 1.81 cubic feet; 8 boxes) contain the personal and professional documents of Dr. William L. Sutton; documents and photographs of the Sutton family; and documents and photographs concerning the Tarlton, Swetnam, Hulett, Thomasson, Belles, Yates, and Crenshaw/Moffett families. Also included are notes by A.L. Fisher, letters, a report card from the Scott Female Institute, funeral notices and other cards, and several unidentified photographs of various formats and other documents.
