Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Kentucky Mountain Club was formed on December 31, 1929 by a group of people who were residents of eastern Kentucky counties. They wished to form an organization to aid in the care of different issues in 43 different counties that they deemed, "Mountain counties". In 1930, a women's division was created and within the division dues were established that would go towards a scholarship that would aid a student in one of the mountain counties, later the men's division would aid in the scholarship as well. The women also participated in charitable events, including visiting the sick, and sending presents for children in rural areas for Christmas. In 1944, the club was able to help set up tuberculosis hospitals in London, Paris, Madisonville, and Ashland, Kentucky. The club reached its height in 1953, with 1,546 members. By 1987, the Club expanded its aid to flood relief, a blood bank, a hearing aid bank, a hospital visiting program, and a library project.
