Collection Overview

Biography / History
The University of Kentucky Amateur Radio Club was founded in 1923 and organized in the 1940s. The station's call sign began as W9JL but then became W4JP which was used from then on. The club was recognized in July 1964 as an affiliate of the American Radio Relay League. The club was awarded the public service certificate of the American Radio Relay League for its services in relaying messages from a tornado stricken area in the Midwest in 1965. It was also highly acclaimed for its assistance with communications during the 1966 Guatemala earthquakes.
Scope and Content
The University of Kentucky Amateur Radio Club records (dated 1927-1938; 1.35 cubic feet, 5 boxes) consists of club information, correspondence between the University and the club, awards that the club received, logs from the radio station, and photographs of club members. Club information includes the charter and correspondence from the University regarding club status. Also included within the Club Information series are papers about the club, signage for meetings, lists of students involved in the Amateur Radio Club, and minutes from meetings.
The Documents series includes a variety of papers pertaining to each year. Some include proposals for new equipment, newspaper articles pertaining to amateur radio, and correspondence between other radio stations. Much of the correspondence that is documented in the files is between the Amateur Radio Club with companies, or with the University of Kentucky. The Amateur Radio Club sought companies to help offset costs in upgrading their radio equipment and contacted numerous corporations. Correspondence between the University of Kentucky and the Radio Club dealt with gaining more space for the club to meet and for money to assist the club. Also included in the documents series are awards that the club received for its work. Awards include certificates from the American Radio Relay League and correspondence from the University and city of Lexington offering their support and gratitude.
The Logs were documents that the Amateur Radio Club created during its existence. The logs tracked information detailing radio calls made from the radio station to other stations from March 1936 to October 1982. The photographs document the equipment that the students used as well as group shots of club members.
